Ambazonian Forces Inflict Heavy Casualty to Government Troops in Bamenda
In a harrowing incident that unfolded in Bamenda and is linked to Ambazonian forces advocating for the independence of Ambazonia—a breakaway state in the two Anglophone regions of French-speaking Cameroon—a fierce assault left a significant toll on Cameroonian defense forces.
According to the National Gendarmerie, the confrontation occurred around 8:30 PM and targeted the Mil 7 mixed post in Mankon, where three Cameroonian forces were gathered for a meal. Armed individuals wielding AK-47s abruptly and fatally opened fire on these elements, resulting in devastating losses.
The impact on the armed forces is profound: two gendarmes lost their lives in this attack. The fallen heroes are Gendarmes ATANGA Gédéon Muluh and VZIGA GARAWA Daniel, both in service at the 90th squadron in Bamenda. Additionally, a policeman, Peacekeeper 2nd Class NGOUTOU Martin, serving at the GMI Bamenda, sustained injuries and was promptly transported to intensive care at the Bamenda Regional Hospital. Ambazonian forces seized a rifle during the assault. The bodies of the deceased government troops have been conveyed to the Bamenda hospital morgue, while an investigation is underway at the Territorial Gendarmerie Grouping in Bamenda.{loadmoduleid 377}
The recent deadly attack in Bamenda, attributed to Ambazonian forces fighting for the independence of Ambazonia, underscores the persistent and tragic conflict in the Anglophone regions of Cameroon. This incident, which claimed the lives of two gendarmes and left a policeman injured, is a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle between Ambazonian separatists and the Cameroonian government.
The root of the conflict can be traced back to the protests in 2016 and 2017, met with a harsh government crackdown that escalated tensions. The subsequent unilateral declaration of independence by Ambazonian leaders marked the beginning of a protracted guerrilla war, with clashes persisting till December 2023. The struggle for control over population centers and strategic locations by the government, countered by Ambazonian militias launching guerrilla attacks from remote, rural areas, has resulted in a complex and volatile situation.
One of the key challenges faced by Ambazonian forces is the difficulty in forming a united front, with internal conflicts hindering negotiations with Cameroon and impeding efforts to control various militia groups engaged in the fighting. This lack of cohesion has contributed to the ongoing human rights abuses reported on both sides, including indiscriminate killing of civilians, torture, rape, gender-based crimes, and unjustified detentions.
It is imperative to recognize the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to this conflict. The loss of lives on both sides is a tragic consequence of a political and social struggle that demands attention and intervention. International diplomatic efforts, mediated dialogues, and a commitment to addressing the root causes of the conflict are crucial for finding a sustainable solution.
Cameroon must engage in meaningful dialogue with Ambazonian leaders to address legitimate concerns and aspirations. The international community, including regional bodies and organizations, should play a role in facilitating negotiations and ensuring that human rights are protected for all parties involved.
In conclusion, the recent attack in Bamenda serves as a poignant reminder of the human toll of the ongoing conflict in the Anglophone regions of Cameroon. It is incumbent upon the international community to actively support efforts towards a peaceful resolution that respects the rights and aspirations of all involved parties.{loadmoduleid 378}
