Tensions Rise as Sabotage Allegations Cloud Cameroon-Namibia AFCON Qualifier

Reports suggest that key stadium equipment was deliberately disconnected by the Regional Delegate of Sports for the North and the stadium’s director, in what appears to be an attempt to prevent the match from taking place.

Eyewitnesses, including local motorcycle taxi drivers, reportedly observed the disconnection of the stadium's electrical and operational systems, sparking concerns that the match could be relocated or even canceled. The incident has exacerbated tensions between the Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot) and government officials, who have been at odds over the choice of venue for the match.

Despite these sabotage allegations, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed that the match will proceed as planned in Garoua. In a letter dated August 26, 2024, CAF reaffirmed its decision to hold the match at Roumdé Adjia Stadium, responding to concerns raised by the Minister of Sports and Physical Education, Narcisse Mouelle Kombi, and the Director-General of the National Office of Sports Infrastructure and Equipment (ONIES), Félix Xavier Ewane.

The controversy has also implicated Seidou Mbombo Njoya, a former president of Fecafoot, who is accused of facilitating communication between the government and CAF in an effort to have the match moved. This follows a similar incident involving the sabotage of the Japoma Stadium pitch last week, which further strained relations between Fecafoot and government officials.

The public reaction has been one of frustration and disbelief, with many Cameroonians questioning the management of the nation’s sports infrastructure and the motives behind these actions. Critics argue that such incidents damage Cameroon’s reputation on the international stage and undermine the country’s ability to host major sporting events.
