War against corruption:Lawyer for former FECAFOOT president begs the Special Criminal Court to consider his charity gestures to the nation
The leader of the Iya Mohammed's legal team, Barrister Mballa Manasseh has pleaded with the Special Criminal Court not to send his client to jail brandishing his kind donations he made towards the development of the country. Iya Mohammed currently detained for embezzlement was not only the manager of the Cameroon Cotton Development Corporation (Sodecoton), but was also the president of the Cameroon Football Federation aka FECAFOOT. His advocate painted a picture of him in front of judges at the Special Criminal Court describing Iya as "a man with a good heart."
Barrister Mballa revealed that Iya Mohammed's acts of kindness resulted in him making generous donations to the tune of 40 to 50 billion FCFA in cash to remote areas in the Northern regions of the country. Mballa Manasseh recalled that it was also under the 31 years rule of Iya Mohammed at Cameroon Cotton Development Corporation (Sodecoton) that the company garnered significant dividends and concluded that it would be unfair to convict his client especially as the charges against him were fabricated by people who wanted his job at the Cameroon Football Federation.
The Special Criminal Court session that was chaired by Justices Yap Abdou and Yvette siewe reminded the court that Iya Mohammed was among others accused of embezzling 3.178 billion FCFA including a 5.385 billion FCFA leveled as "unexplained".
