Renewing the Promise: Julius Fondong Calls for a New Cameroon Governance Model
Cameroon policy analyst and governance expert Julius N. Fondong has released his latest book, Renewing the Promise: A Treatise on the Refoundation of the Cameroon Nation, calling on presidential candidates to anchor their electoral platforms on governance reform and national renewal.
A blueprint for presidential hopefuls
Fondong positions his book as an essential guide for candidates in the upcoming presidential election, arguing that the country’s leaders must return to the founding principles of unity and accountability set during Cameroon’s 1961 unification. He warns that policy inconsistencies, leadership deficiencies and disregard for those promises have weakened public service delivery and heightened internal dissent.
“Our nation’s foundation was built on the promise of coexistence and shared progress, but that promise has been betrayed,” Fondong writes. He highlights the failures of governance that have locked Cameroon into a cycle of political stagnation and underdevelopment.
Decentralization and leadership reform
The author proposes a governance model based on decentralized structures, redistribution of power, and respect for the right to self-determination of Anglophone Cameroonians. He calls for an overhaul of the country’s leadership style, shifting from transactional to transformational approaches to strengthen public institutions and build trust.
“Only by re-engineering our governance architecture from the bottom up can we avert disintegration and achieve sustainable development,” Fondong explains, urging presidential candidates to integrate these proposals into their manifestos.
Available to the public
Described as a passionate and data-driven political essay, Renewing the Promise is offered in Cameroon at a discounted price of 7,500 CFA francs, down from 10,000 CFA. The book is available directly via local contacts.
