U.S. Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has shaken up his campaign staff amid sliding poll numbers and signs of disarray, U.S. media reported early on Wednesday.
Trump made senior advisor Kellyanne Conway his campaign manager, and Breitbart News executive chairman Stephen Bannon has been brought on as the campaign's chief executive, the New York Times reported citing Conway.
Paul Manafort would remain as campaign chair, it said. The Washington Post cited campaign aides as saying that while Trump respected Manafort, he felt "'boxed in' and 'controlled' by people "who barely knew him".
Manafort was forced to deny any impropriety this week after the New York Times reported his name was on secret ledgers showing cash payments designated to him of more than $12 million from a Ukrainian political party with close ties to Russia. Manafort has denied impropriety.
Manafort took on the role in March after Trump fired his predecessor Corey Lewandowski.
The shakeup comes as opinion polls show Trump, a wealthy New York businessman who has never held elected office, falling behind Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton in the race for the Nov. 8 election.
The Wall Street Journal said on Monday in an editorial that Trump should fix his stumbling White House campaign by Labor Day on Sept. 5 or step down.

A Malawian man accused of sleeping with 100 girls and women in a series of ritual cleansing acts, on Monday failed in his second bid to be freed on bail.
Prosecutor Christopher Botoman opposed the bail request for Eric Aniva over fears that he could “intimidate and influence” witnesses not to testify in court.
Given the “nature and seriousness of the offence and the severity of the punishment if convicted” it would “not be in the interest of justice to release the accused on bail.”
Malawi, which has one of the highest HIV infections in the world, criminalises sex with a person under the age of 16.
The prosecution also said the 45-year-old — who has said he is infected with the AIDS virus — was likely to jump bail and cross the border into Mozambique.
But Aniva, whose first bid to secure bail was earlier this month, rejected the idea, saying he was “not scared” to face trial.
The little-known local practice of having sex with adolescent girls to mark their passage to womanhood is performed in southern Malawi by men known as “hyenas” at the behest of a girl’s parents after her first menstruation.

The United States of America has extended anniversary felicitations to the Republic of Congo as the country marked its 56th Independence anniversary on Monday.
A statement from the United States (US) department of state read, ‘‘On behalf of President Obama and the American people, I send best wishes to the people of the Republic of Congo as you celebrate your 56th Independence Day on August 15.’‘
The US emphasized its continued partnership with Congo in defense of regional security, environmental protection, and the health and happiness of all Congolese.
Adding further that, they looked ‘‘forward to continued partnership to help build a more secure, democratic, and prosperous future for Congo in the year ahead.’‘
The anniversary parade was well attended by heads of state largely from francophone Africa. Among others Ivorian speaker of parliament Guillaume Soro, Benin president Patrice Talon, Teodoro Obiang Nguema of Equatorial Guinea and Alpha Conde of Guinea were all present.
The country currently ruled by Denis Sassou Nguesso got their independence from France in 1960. Its first president was Fulbert Youlou. The country has had a difficult past mired by violent wars.
It returned to multi party democracy in the early 1990s. The Congolese Labour Party led by incumbent Sassou Nguesso have dominated the political landscape since then. The party won the recent elections by over 60% of votes cast.

Fourteen former Cameronian hostages recently freed in Central African Republic arrived Garoua, the regional capital of the North, by Camair-Co flight yesterday 14th Agust 2016.
The hostages were freed in an operation by the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) in Central Africa,in the night of 8-9 July 2016 after spending over a year in captivity at the hands of a rebel group from the Central African Republic.
The Cameroonian former hostages were in Yaounde ever since their release. While in the nation's capital, they received medical care and an audience by the Prime Minister of Cameroon who was acting On behalf of the President of Cameroon, Paul Biya.
Upon their capture on the 19th of March 2015 ,one of the hostages, Abakai said, the group was divided into pairs and chained at the leg and abdomen and, at times, the hands. Two people were given a liter of water to share for 24 hours, and they ate the same meal, once a day, for 16 months. One captive reportedly was held for 18 months. The captives were allowed to go to the toilet twice a day, at 10 a.m. and at 5 p.m.
The captives lost hope, Abakai said, when rebels told them that if the government of Cameroon did not pay for their liberation by July 31, 2016, they would be killed.
Abakai said two of the hostages died in those deplorable conditions, and he expressed gratitude to God and the government of Cameroon for helping to save his life. He did not know if ransoms were paid.
Captive Daouda Abdoulaye, 48, said the armed men told them they were members of a movement fighting for liberation of the Central African Republic; they vowed to kill the hostages if the government of Cameroon refused to pay undisclosed sums of money to secure their release.
A group of soldiers armed with rifles, claiming to belong to the Democratic Front for Central African People, led by Aboubakar Sidiki, took the captives to the bush, where they were tortured every morning, Abdoulaye said. They were kept in villages, away from other human settlements.
