Hundreds of supporters turned out in Limbe on Tuesday to welcome United National Democratic Party (UNDP) candidate Bello Bouba Maigari, as he staged a rally that was nearly frustrated by local authorities.

Rally nearly blocked

The event followed a tense morning after the Limbe sub-prefect abruptly cancelled an earlier planned UNDP meeting, despite having previously issued an authorization under Cameroon’s 1990 law on public gatherings. Police intervened to disperse party members at the first venue, citing last-minute restrictions including a ban on using the municipal stadium.

This abrupt reversal has sparked fresh questions about freedom of assembly as the country approaches its 12 October 2025 presidential election. The administrative letter, seen by Cameroon Concord, had explicitly authorized the meeting at the Limbe Women’s Empowerment and Family Centre, scheduled from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Defiance and mobilisation

Despite the administrative setback, Bello Bouba pressed ahead with a campaign stop later in the day. Addressing a packed hall, he galvanised militants with calls for unity and reform, installing his regional campaign team and securing pledges of massive support on election day.

“The determination of our militants cannot be suppressed,” he told supporters, describing the gathering as proof of resilience against obstacles placed before the party.

Political context

The incident highlights the ongoing tension between political actors and administrative authorities in the run-up to Cameroon’s crucial election. Analysts say such restrictions risk undermining the credibility of the vote. The UNDP, once part of Cameroon’s ruling coalition, is positioning itself as an alternative voice in 2025.
