African Footballer of the Year Aubameyang turns down 70 million € offer from Real Madrid
Real Madrid have suffered blows in their reported pursuits of Borussia Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski, with both looking set to stay at their current clubs.
Aubameyang, in an interview with Kicker (h/t Dom Farrell of Goal), spoke of his affection for Dortmund, and while conceding he would love to don the Los Blancos colours, the striker revealed he’d have no problem remaining at the Westfalenstadion for the time being:
Dortmund is a city which is totally crazy about football. In the last years, we have the highest average attendance in Europe. The city is safe and my family feels at home.
I've never made a secret of [the fact] I would someday like to play for Real Madrid, but I also have not extended my contract at BVB until 2020 without a reason. I feel very good here.
It had been reported by AS’ Joaquin Maroto that the capital club had already agreed a deal with the Gabon striker, although not with Dortmund. In the piece it’s suggested BVB will hold out for a fee of €100 million for Aubameyang. And not without reason; the striker has been magnificent so far this term. Here is a reminder of some of his best moments so far:
You could certainly see the African Footballer of the Year fitting in at the Santiago Bernabeu. The style of football Real have long been associated with is about moving the ball quickly, getting players with pace in possession and stretching teams with scintillating counter-attacking football. Aubameyang is tailor made for that.
It’s why he’s performed so well under Thomas Tuchel this term, who has continued the nurturing process put in place by his former manager Jurgen Klopp. Aubameyang is now more efficient when he has the ball, whether laying off to team-mates or finishing chances himself.
