Francis Yong Afumbom, Co-President of Cameroon’s League I Club, Yong Sports Academy, YOSA, in an exclusive interview granted Lions4life, has asserted that YOSA is destined for greater achievements this year. He also mentioned the increasing turnout of supporters YOSA has been experiencing since they moved to Nkwen. He shares the secret behind the team’s stay in top flight football and also the challenges of getting a sponsor. Read on:
What do you think is behind a team’s success? Is it the players, coaches or management?
You can’t say a team and think it involves just the players. A team involves players, coaching staff, management of the team, other staff and the supporters also have a significant role to play. In our case, it is not different. We all have been working hand-in-glove to achieve this.
YOSA is currently among the first three clubs on the classification table, what is the team’s dream for the season?
You are correct about our position on the classification table. Our goal has always been to reach a better ranking than the previous season. We always prepare to win the next game, thus making victory our top priority, match after match. However, it doesn’t matter if we lose a match or win, but what is important is that the fighting spirit should be there in every player in the team.
Maintaining a team is all about finances; do you have what it takes to maintain a team, given that the founder of the team died many years ago?
To be honest with you, the founder of YOSA (Pa Yong Francis) had set up a system which we are following to maintain the team. I would be telling you a lie if I said that it is an easy task running this team. We have tried on several occasions to get sponsors, but nothing has materialised. At the moment, we are trying our best with the resources at our disposal.
Is government subvention enough?
(Laughs) I would let you answer that question.
After the Cup of Cameroon victory in 2013, it was reported that the team parted ways with Coach Emmanuel Ndoumbe Bosso in a controversial way, what transpired and why the reconciliation?
Coach Emmanuel Ndoumbe Bosso in a controversial way, what transpired and why the reconciliation?
The team never parted ways with Coach Ndoumbe Bosso in a controversial way. He simply decided he wanted to challenge himself somewhere else which is very normal, since he had just accomplished a major goal with us. I wouldn’t call the return of Ndoumbe Bosso reconciliation; I will call it a homecoming.
What is the secret behind YOSA’s 10-match unbeaten record?
There is nothing extraordinary that we do here at YOSA. We keep it simple which is what we always tell our players. We also try to make sure each and every player is comfortable.
Has match attendance reduced or increased since the team moved to Mile 6 field?
Playing in Nkwen has been great for us. The team has also gained the support of the Paramount ruler of the Nkwen People, HM SF Azehfor III, who had attended two of YOSA’s games since we moved to Nkwen. We are blown away by the turnout in every match. The attendance keeps on increasing, and we are thrilled that YOSA has made such an impact on the people of Nkwen.
What are some of the challenges the club is facing?
Referees!! Referees!! Referees!! Some referees have caused us some downfalls. It would be great if our referees can handle matches fairly and professionally. This is because it is very frustrating when a team puts all the resources to prepare for a game hoping for a victory and then the referee comes and turns things around.
Your players are not complaining about their pay, how is that?
There is no secret, and it isn’t rocket science. It is simple; when you work, you get paid, or you lose motivation. So, we do our best to make sure players and staff are paid so as to keep that team spirit and level of enthusiasm.
Any message for YOSA supporters?
To the fans, I say
YOSA YOSA Allez YOSA
YOSA YOSA Allez YOSA
We are thanking you all for your continuous support and dedication to this our beloved team. We pray that may we all continue to support and motivate our players and staff. May God be our helper.Meanwhile, we have just updated our website and Facebook page to keep our supporters updated about all our activities.Join our fan club by cliking like on our Facebook page.Check our website for more information about YOSA-bamenda

Everton have opened discussions over a £16million deal for Cameroonian striker Vincent Aboubakar currently playing at Porto.
The 24-year-old has been a target for Leicester City in recent months but Everton have talked to the player's representatives and the player is keen to join up with Ronald Koeman at Goodison Park.
The Cameroon international is powerful, quick and scored 16 goals last season. He has 13 goals in 45 games for Cameroon with his last coming in a friendly against France last month.

Cameroonian soccer players in Europe are still struggling to regain their verve after an overwhelming 2015/2016 soccer season.
None of the players won the League title with their respective clubs. To some, it was a fairly good season as they managed to keep their clubs in the top elite competitions, while to others, it was campaign to forget as the performances have left them wandering in limbo as they search for new soccer destinations before the commencement of the 2016/2017 football season.
In this write up, The Post x-rays the performances of Cameroonian players abroad, and what has become of them.
French Ligue I
In France, it was a sad year for Jacques Zoua and goalkeeper Jules Goda all plying their trades with Gazelec Ajaccio, as the team was relegated to Ligue 2. In the course of the year, Goalkeeper Jules Goda fell down the pecking order and lost his position in the starting XI to Clément Maury, who was preferred by the Coach. The Cameroonian Goalkeeper was given another opportunity, but failed to reclaim his position.
Goda’s compatriot, Zoua also witnessed an epileptic goal scoring form throughout the season. The former FC Basel and Hamburg- owned striker managed just five goals in 31 games.
On his part, Marseille’s Nicolas Nkoulou, failed to lift the French Cup, as they were whacked by Paris Saint Germaine in the final. Nkoulou played 33 games and was named as the third most used player in Ligue I.
Karl Toko Ekambi and Adolphe Teikeu fought hard with League II side, FC Sochaux to escape relegation. Ekambi finished the season as top scorer for his team with 11 goals in 34 games. His compatriot and team Captain, Adolphe Teikeu played 27 games, scoring just once.
It was a fairly good season for Olympique Lyonnais’, Henri Bedimo, who helped his team qualify for the UEFA Champions League. It was the last season for the Cameroonian who is now scouted by some English Premier League giants.
Georges Mandjeck and Christian Bekamenga, who both play for FC Metz enjoyed a good season. Thanks to the efforts of the Cameroonian duo, FC Metz was able to gain promotion into the Ligue 1.
Benjamin Moukandjo was the standout Cameroonian Player in terms of performance in the 2015/ 2016 soccer season. The FC Lorient striker gave Swedish Zlatan Ibrahimovic a good run for the Ligue I golden boot.
Moukandjo’s efforts were later foiled by a late injury he picked up that sidelined him for many months.
Barclays Premier League
Just like in the French Liue I, Cameroonian players in the English Premier League also witnessed a torrid season.
Watford right-back, Allan Nyom enjoyed a debut season in the Premier League; as his rugged performance helped Watford maintain its Premier League status.
Unlike Nyom, Alexandre Song experienced one of the worst seasons in his soccer career with West Ham United. Song played just 12 games throughout the season and is one of the players who have been left in Limbo as he heads back to his parent club Barcelona where his fate is uncertain.
On the other, Tottenham Hotspurs’ Clinton Njie struggled with injuries in his debut season in the Premier League. The former Lyon Striker was sidelined for six months and will be hoping to be given another opportunity to revive his career.
La Liga(Spain)
In the Spanish La Liga, Idriss Carlos Kameni was able to keep prolific attackers like Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Antoine Griezmann and Neymar Junior abbey. Out of 32 games, Kameni conceded only 26 goals, making him the best Cameroonian Goalkeeper in Europe in 2016.
Fabrice Ondoa on his part has been unable to stamp his authority on a starting spot since moving from Barcelona team B to Gimnastic de Tarragona in Division II, before being loaned out to Pobla Mafumet, a Division III side.
Bundesliga (Germany)
After so many years in Germany, Joel Matip finally ended his engagement with Schalke 04 and penned a new contract with Liverpool in the Premier League. Before his transfer to England, the Defender made 34 appearances for the Bundesliga Club, scoring three goals.
Like Joel Matip, Marvin Matip played 33 games, scoring two goals. He equally captained his team, Ingolstadt as they battled together to escape relegation.
On his part, Maxim Choupo-Moting plagued by injuries, only scored six goals in 28 games with Schalke 04. His club will compete in the Europa League next year.
Primeira Liga (Portugal)
Vincent Aboubakar enjoyed a prolific season with FC Porto and emerged top scorer for the team with 13 goals. It was an improvement of last season at the club where he scored only four times in the league.
Belgium – Beloften Pro League
Lewis Mbah Enoh’s three goals helped his club, KSC Lokeren to finish the season on the 11th spot. On their part, Collins Fai and Eyong Enoh helped Standard Liège to win the Belgian Cup. But the team ended the League on the 7th position thereby missing out of European elite competitions.

Though the away leg match in February 2016 produced no goal in Bamenda, YOSA made sure they get a goal to seal their 10th game unbeaten.
Team captain Jude Kongnyuy made maximum use of capital defensive error from Aigle de Menoua to fire in the equalizer for YOSA as they were one goal down thanks to a spot kick converted to a goal by Aigle just a few minutes into the second half.
YOSA began their journey to their 10th unbeaten game with 1-1 draw against New star of Douala which was their first League One Match in their Mile Six Nkwen Stadium.
Out of the ten matches three of them have been won at home and three won away.
Two of the four draws have been home and two away with the latest being the Sunday June 19 draw with Aigle de Menoua.
Talking to the press Ailge manager noted that YOSA got an equaliser due to lack of communication. Joseph Ndoko regretted that it is becoming recurrent for his club to get equalisers when they list expect.
Emmanuel Ndoumbe Bosso on his part praised his boys for taking to instruction and staying concentrated. The YOSA manager explained that they knew the opponents as a good side and so they had to take the game seriously.
While Aigle moves to 30 points on the 8th spot on the classification table, YOSA leaves Dschang with one point raising their overall tally to 39 thus keeping them on the second please where they have been since Day-20.
