The University of Buea, UB, over the weekend graduated its 20th batch of students while the Catholic University Institute of Buea, CUIB, sent out its second batch. What was particular about the UB convocation was the first batch of Pan-African Master’s degree students from the Advanced School of Translators and Interpreters (ASTI). The 10 Pan-African graduates were joined by 26 PhD holders and approximately 3,320 graduates in Bachelor Degrees. Mbutuh Escarter Brieno Temnou from the College of Technology hit 3.86 GPA with a First Class Honours Degree in Computer Networks and Systems Maintenance. The Vice Chancellor of UB, Nalova Lyonga, recalled that Memoranda of Understanding have been signed with companies where students do practicals and modern ICT equipment installed in UB that links the institution to other higher centres of learning.
Sitting in for the Minister of Higher Education, Professor Maurice Tchuente indicated that the graduation of students from the Pan-Africa University in UB represented Cameroon’s core values to Pan-Africanism. On the other hand, the Catholic University Institute of Buea graduated 290 students. With its motto that hinges on entrepreneurial training, great strides have been made by the graduating students in the area of job creation. Vanessa Zommi won the second international prize for the Anzisha Award in South Africa for having worked with her team to produce the Moringa Tea which treats diabetes.
Yannick Engemise created an environmentally-friendly company to produce paper sacks as against plastic sacks. Theodore Maya produced an Egusi-cracking machine. It is with these innovations that the President of CUIB, Rev. Father George Nkeze Jingwa, announced that the Ministry of Higher Education has authorised the institute to run graduate and MBA programmes. He added that the schools will begin January 2016. The Vicar General and Chancellor of the Diocese of Charlotte, USA, Monsignor Mauricio West also attended the ceremony.

Pupils of “Les Coccinelles” School Complex at the Unity Palace and the First Lady of Cameroon, Mrs Chantal Biya yesterday, December 21, 2015 at the premises of the school illuminated an adorned Christmas tree. This was during the traditional Christmas tree lighting ceremony that brought a happy moment for teachers, parents, pupils and the First Lady who also doubles as the matron of the school. The event took place in the presence of several members of government and the diplomatic corps. At “Les Coccinelles” Primary School Complex, Christmas decorations went up everywhere, both outside and inside of the school buildings and walkways. The beautifully adorned Christmas lights could be seen wrapped around trees and flowers.
The arrival of the school matron kick-started the Christmas party much to the delight of the pupils. Around an embellished Christmas tree that reflected the colour of the season, the over 90 pupils together with visiting and former pupils of the school, crowded their dear mother, “Mama Chantal” as she plucked sweets and other goodies from the tree and distributed to them. This was a special moment for the kids and their matron. The First Lady’s gesture was appreciated by parents, dignitaries and particularly pupils who were glad to be at the receiving end. The close to three-hour ceremony was marked by some thrilling performances from the pupils such as sketches, songs, traditional dances and recitations about Christmas. In succinct displays, the kids, in the official languages, French and English, showed that they master the social and biblical meanings of Christmas.
In songs, “Les Coccinelles” pupils expressed their desires in waiting for Christmas which is a period during which they are sure to receive gifts from friends, relatives and, above all, their matron. Through recitations, the pupils told their audience that Christmas is a period of love and Jesus came to show people His love. As the world celebrates love, the kids through songs said Christmas is a time for merrymaking, a time for families to come together, a time for special entertainment and a time for joy. They expressed gratitude to the First Lady for the care and concern she showers on them. As such, the local artists, Nar6 Laval, in one of his hits “Merci Maman” was there to accompany the kids in appreciating their matron.
Just as the kids had said Christmas is a time to receive gifts, so it was for them and other children present at the event. All the former and current pupils of the school as well as visiting kids present at the ceremony received a special Christmas package from Mrs Chantal Biya. Besides sharing a common meal with the pupils, the First Lady also took time off to verify their classroom performances. In the midst of Christmas carols, the First Lady and the pupils took a souvenir picture while hoping for another fun-filled Christmas party next year.

A total of nine people died in Yaounde last weekend in two separate road accidents. The first took place at Olembe on the outskirts of the capital when seven people, mostly school children, were killed on Friday, December 18, 2015. The incident happened at ‘Olembe Ecole’ at about 3:30 pm. The second was on Saturday, December 19, 2015, at 4 pm in Simbock where two people on a private sports bike were killed after they collided with a vehicle. The man and woman died on the spot after the motor cycle crashed on the bonnet, shattered the windscreen and projected them to land on the tarmac behind the taxi.
Eyewitness reports say in the Olembe accident, a truck with registration number CE SR 214 A, carrying 35 tonnes of cement, went off track, unearthed an electric pole before killing and wounding people. The truck reportedly suffered a mechanical breakdown on the way to supply cement in the neighbourhood. Reports say the driver jumped out of the truck while the conductor is said to have died on the spot. According to the Gendarmerie ‘Brigade’ in Nkolondom, seven people died on the spot, with five others severely wounded. The wounded were rushed to the Yaounde Central Hospital. Among those who were killed were primary school children from Government Primary School Olembe who had closed for the First Term and were on their way home.
At the scene of the accident on Saturday, December 19, 2015, efforts were being made to clear the ruins. Deputy Superintendent of Police, Anyouzoa Mbida Jules, said the accident equally caused huge material damage. He explained that such accidents are frequent in the area between ‘Olembe Ecole’ and ‘Olembe Echangeur’ due to over speeding. He expressed wish that more speed breaks be constructed on that strip of road in order to reduce the accidents.
