Business men and women in Kumba have seriously lamented on the constant power shortage over the past week by the electricity supply company ENEO.
These business men and women have noted that the frequent cut of power supply have greatly affected their day to day running of their businesses, given the fact that they were not issued any prior notification before the cuts.
Some business people, who spoke to The SUN, said that their perishable products are in the state of decay. Others hinted that they could barely operate their business in such a condition.
Owners of snack and off license have equally expressed the loss they have undergone during this period since they can only operate fully during the day.
Mr. Ndip Maurice, Manager of a cyber café recounts the material and financial damages in his business place so far caused by the frequent power cut.
This situation has not only affected businesses, households too have registered significant damages of their appliances.
Some families express the uncomfortable condition and change of life style they have to go through during this period.
The SUN however gathered that the current persistent power cuts is as a result of the ongoing technical amendments in the various quarters caused by the recent heavy down pour.
Nevertheless many families have resorted to the purchase of solar lambs to enable their children do homework at night. Business owners have also purchased generators to aid them during this period.

Students of the University of Buea, UB, have addressed a “Thank You” letter to the Head of State, President Paul Biya for his promise to grant 500,000 laptops to students in Higher Education. This was at the end of a somewhat belated support march in Buea on Wednesday, October 19, 2016.
They marched from the Independence Square in Buea to the South West Governor’s Office where they handed the letter to Governor Bernard Okalia Bilai for onward transmission to the Head of State.
The students in the letter say “it is with great delight and a lot of excitement that we welcomed the news. We equally note with great optimism that our leaders have our interest at heart and will stop at nothing to see that we have a bright future before us.”
“...Our father, our president, our leader, our commander-in-chief who ensures our security, and our mentor who has not only provided us with eight state universities, but now also providing us the tools to use in order to be productive and competitive in a global digital economy,” the thank you letter reads in part.
The students in a motion read by Ngashi Wilson, a year-three student at UB’s Political Science Department applauded President Biya’s gesture and thanked government.
“We can boldly stand up and say we are proud of our country and, above all, we thank God almighty for our president who has our interest at heart,” the motion read.
The students said the laptops will fast tract Cameroon’s drive to emergence by 2035.
Governor Okalia promised to transmit the “Thank You” letter to President Biya, urging the students to support the Head of State’s vision to make Cameroon an emerging country by 2035.
Justifying the low-keyed turnout of students at the march, UB’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Nalova Lyonga said every student could not have been mobilised to take part in the march.
“...I think we are happy with the number that we brought up. All I can tell the students is that we have the legacy to keep the University of Buea as the place to be as the governor himself kept reminding us... the head of state has gone from an excellence award to one student, one computer,” Prof. Nalova told the press.
She denied claims that they had been pressured to organise the support march, given that similar shows had been staged in Bamenda and Yaoundé shortly after the announcement was made.
She said they had to wait for school resumption to organise the ceremony.
On how soon the students will receive the laptops, she said: “We are going to wait for news to come from the Ministry of Higher Education. The important thing is that the computers have been awarded and the students are going to have it.”
Though the students were transported to and fro the event ground, they were given FCFA 1,000 each shortly after the brief ceremony at the esplanade of the Governor’s Office.
Meantime, shortly before yesterday’s march, a list of those to benefit from the President’s Excellence Award to meritorious students of the University of Buea had been put up. Disbursement of the FCFA 50,000 due each beneficiary is announced to began yesterday, October 20.

Members of the University of Buea Chapter of National Union of University Teachers, SYNES, have maintained that the Faculty of Social and Management Sciences, FSMS, must not be split into other faculties as intended by the Minister of Higher Education.
In a release signed by Chapter President Dr James A. Abangma and Secretary General Dr Fontem A. Neba, the Unionists say it will not be proper to remove the nomenclature “Social Sciences” which has been used since the creation of the University of Buea.
They added that the nomenclature reflects the Anglo-Saxon tradition. According to Wednesdays’ Issue of The Guardian Post Newspaper, the lecturers also frown on poor funding of the University.
They revealed that for many years subsidies have been very small and that the situation is having an adverse effect on lecturers as bonuses cannot be paid on time. If split as planned by the Ministry of Higher Education, the Faculty of Social and Management Sciences will now have Faculties of Law, Economics and Management, Law School and School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

A lady whose names the SUN got as Nanje Rose Essome Epse Eko, Cashier of the Union Bank’s Limbe branch has allegedly bolted with a whooping sum of more than FCFA 100 million and is nowhere to be found.
The circumstances under which she carried out this act are unclear and investigations are ongoing to ascertain how a low-level bank employee could pull off such a heist.
However, reports have it that Rose has worked for the bank for quite a while now and had gradually earned the trust and confidences of her superiors and many customers which might have given her access to such amounts.
A team from the bank’s headquarters in Douala was dispatched last week to investigate into the matter and also find out if Rose acted alone or with the complicity of other workers. It is alleged that from the findings, other heads have started rolling due either to negligence, oversight or complicity.
Rumours also have it that while on the hunt for Rose, her husband and another family member were arrested and remanded in custody for interrogation but were later released. The SUN has not independently confirmed the rumours.
Two other employees of the bank were later arrested for negligence and released on bail to appear in court on Monday, October 17.
The two employees are said to have been dismissed by the bank for gross negligence after a team from the Douala headquarters found out that Rose might have stolen money in the shades of over FCFA 100M whereas the Limbe Bank had only reported FCFA 50M stolen.
A source from the Limbe Central police station who opted for anonymity told The SUN that the money appears to have been stolen systematically over a period of time. The source alleged that Rose might have been collecting money from customers without presenting the whole sum to the bank.
