Nigeria's government has recovered $9.1 billion in stolen money and assets, its information and culture minister said on Saturday, as its corruption crackdown continues against the backdrop of the country's worst economic crisis in years.
President Muhammadu Buhari, elected last year largely on his vow to fight corruption, has vowed to recover "mind-boggling" sums of money stolen from the oil sector and said public coffers were "virtually empty" when he took office last May.
Since then the country has endured an economic crisis caused by the sharp fall in global oil prices, making the need to recoup lost money more acute. Crude sales account for around 70 percent of national income.
In a statement, Information Minister Lai Mohammed said cash and assets recovered between May 29 last year, when Buhari took office, and May 25 this year totaled $9.1 billion.
The government has said it plans to generate 3.38 trillion naira ($17 billion) this year from non-oil sources to help fund the $30.6 billion budget signed into law by Buhari last month.
It was not immediately clear how much outstanding money in total is still being sought by the government.
"All these are monies recovered from individuals and entities who had either hidden, stolen, diverted or were in possession of monies belonging to the nation," the minister's special adviser, Segun Adeyemi, told Reuters.
"These recovered funds include monies withheld by past government officials, monies kept in private accounts, monies diverted to private pockets and monies in possession of government officials not disclosed after leaving government."
The information minister told Reuters he could not name any individuals from whom money had been recovered for legal reasons.
He said some of the money came after companies that had failed to pay taxes were forced to do so retrospectively.
The ministry also said a total of $321 million was yet to be recovered from Nigerians in Switzerland, the Britain, the United States and the United Arab Emirates or their assets held in those countries.

United Airlines flies daily between to Lagos — Nigeria's largest city — and the U.S. city of Houston, Texas. But not for much longer.
Media reports say demand for the route connecting the two oil-industry capitals has fallen. The airline is also having trouble converting proceeds from ticket sales in Nigeria's naira into dollars.
United is not the only airline with this problem. Spanish carrier Iberia recently ended its flights to Nigeria from Madrid. The International Air Transport Association says nearly $600 million in airline revenues is trapped in Nigeria.
Chris Aligbe, CEO of aviation consulting firm Belujane Konzult, says if airlines can't get their money out of a country, they leave.
"Airlines are in business to make money and to survive,” he said. “And when they make money and they don't find the value in the money they are making, they will give up."
The global drop in the price of Nigeria's top export, oil, has caused a shortage of dollars in the country. Capital controls imposed by the government mean many companies struggle to move profits out of Nigeria.
Nigerian airlines — such as Arik Air and Medview — that fly internationally may see more passengers attracted to them, Aligbe said. These airlines can accept payments in naira without having to worry about moving the money overseas.
But these airlines will still have to settle bills in the countries they serve in foreign currency.
"They are facing very serious challenges in terms of that. But they are also gaining in terms of passengers," Aligbe said.

Foreign airlines have taken measures to reduce their exposure to naira. Delta Air Lines, for instance, doesn't accept payment in naira for certain tickets.
While they may reduce their services, Aligbe said countries with longstanding ties to Nigeria are unlikely to end their flights. Ethiopian Airlines has been flying to Nigeria since the 1960s. British Airways also has been flying to the country since it was a colony of the UK. And Turkish Airlines connects Nigeria to a country it does hundreds of millions of dollars in trade with every year.
"I know that airlines like BA will never pull out,” Aligbe said. “I know that Ethiopian Airline will not pull out. I know that Turkish Airlines will not pull out."Nigeria's central bank announced last month that it would alter its foreign exchange policy. Details on those changes have yet to be made public.

The bodies of at least 85 people who drowned trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea were found washed up on beaches near the Libyan city of Zuwarah. According to Red Crescent official Al-Khamis Al-Bosaifi, the bodies were already in a state of decomposition, making it difficult to determine when they had drowned.
The bodies of two children were among those found on the beaches. He said that the migrants looked to be from sub-Saharan Africa. On Tuesday, the UN refugee agency said at least 880 people drowned over the past week following a series of shipwrecks as departures from the North African coast towards Italy surged.

President Muhammadu Buhari has unexpectedly called off a visit to the oil-producing Niger Delta region where he was to have launched a pollution clean-up operation. He will be represented by his deputy.
President Muhammadu Buhari was due to visit Ogoniland on Thursday (02.06.2016) and the trip was called off at the very last moment.
No reason was given for the sudden change of plan but it comes in the wake of an upsurge in attacks on oil producing infrastructure in southern Nigera. Buhari will now be represented by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo
Speaking before the trip was cancelled, Liz Donnelly, Assistant Head of the Africa Programme at Chatham House, UK, told DW that this would have been a difficult visit. President Muhammadu Buahri, from the mainly Muslim Nigerian north, wouldn't necessarily receive a warm welcome in the predominantly Christian south.
"Nigeria's oil producing region voted for the now opposition People's Democratic Party (PDP) [of former president Goodluck Jonathan] and Buhari is regarded with some mistrust, because of where he comes from, and also because of his history as a military ruler," she said.
This would have been Buhari's first trip to the oil producing south since he took office a yea ago.
