The recent attacks in central Nigeria, particularly in the Bokkos and Barkin-Ladi areas of Plateau State, resulted in a tragic loss of lives and widespread destruction of property. According to Plateau State Gov. Caleb Mutfwang, at least 140 people were killed, and many homes were burned down during the attacks on 17 communities over the weekend.
Amnesty International Nigeria's office has confirmed the death count, though there are concerns that the actual toll could be higher as some individuals remain unaccounted for. The victims were found in Christian-dominated areas of Plateau State.
As of noon Tuesday, no group has claimed responsibility for the attacks. Local officials and workers referred to the perpetrators as "bandits" who carried out well-coordinated assaults across the communities. President Bola Tinubu, who assumed office earlier this year, has condemned the attacks, describing them as security challenges. He pledged justice for the victims and relief for the affected area in a statement issued on Tuesday. The situation underscores the ongoing security challenges in parts of Nigeria, and efforts are needed to address the root causes and prevent further violence.

Soldiers in Nigeria have raised their voices in criticism against President Bola Tinubu's government, alleging that their December salaries have not been paid, dampening the spirits of Christmas and New Year celebrations.
Accusing President Tinubu and military leaders of insensitivity to their plight, the soldiers expressed frustration at being turned into beggars, seeking financial support from friends and strangers to meet their family's needs.
This situation highlights a concerning aspect of the festive season, where those entrusted with the nation's security find themselves grappling with financial uncertainties, raising questions about the government's commitment to the welfare of its military personnel.

Bamenda, the regional capital of the Northwest, witnessed a troubling Christmas morning as an improvised explosive device destroyed three makeshift shops at T-Junction. A witness lamented the significant damage caused by the explosion, stating, "My brother's clothing store was completely burned, and the fruits in a nearby stall were also engulfed in flames."
While the origin of the explosive remains unclear, suspicions immediately surfaced, pointing fingers at separatist fighters. This form of violence, often associated with separatist groups, has previously targeted the military but unfortunately ends up harming the civilian population. "This is how the Amba Boys operate; they plant explosives targeting the military but end up harming the helpless population. Look at the destruction in these difficult times," a resident remarked.
This incident added a somber note to Christmas celebrations in Bamenda, a city already grappling with the challenges of being a traditional ghost town every Monday. Despite the festive occasion of Christmas, the streets remained eerily empty, contrasting with the usual hustle and bustle of Christmas Day.
The atmosphere, typically vibrant with crowds in the streets, was replaced by a disconcerting silence as residents chose to stay home to avoid potential dangers associated with the sporadic violence plaguing Bamenda. The impact of the explosion resonates not only in the material damage to the shops but also in the disruption of Christmas festivities.
Many citizens opted to celebrate within the safety of their homes, avoiding public spaces to mitigate the risk of encountering violence or mass shootings, sadly becoming a grim reality in the city. The situation reflects the broader uncertainty prevailing in many cities and villages in the English-speaking regions of Cameroon.
Christmas Day, falling on a Monday, coincides with the traditional observance of the ghost town. While some brave the desolate streets to attend religious services, the majority of residents choose a quieter celebration at home.

In an unprecedented turn of events in the last two decades, employees of the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT) are set to spend the 2023 Christmas without receiving their salaries. Moreover, uncertainty looms over the payment of the traditional 13th-month salary, a ritual within the organization managing Cameroonian football.
Journalist Boris Bertolt highlighted the situation, stating, "For the first time in 20 years, FECAFOOT employees will spend Christmas without receiving their salaries. Let's not even mention the 13th-month, which is no longer in effect."
IYA Mohammed, the president of FECAFOOT, faced criticism from journalist Guibai Gatama, who remarked, "Here is a gravedigger of our football. He killed our football; we haven't achieved anything with him. The Federation's coffers were always empty. He didn't even pay December salaries on time for a joyful family celebration."
However, a commenter, Grégoire Nzomo, cautioned against comparing current challenges with the past, stating, "This irony does not please me. We know that the situation is not at its best at FECAFOOT, but we shouldn't turn it into a drama to the point of making comparisons that border on sadism. We can ask FECAFOOT to address the problem without seeking something else. Even if IYA Mohammed had good management, there were also problems at FECAFOOT during his tenure."
Guibai Gatama responded, defending the right to express opinions, stating, "Grégoire Nzomo, you were probably young when Iya Mohammed was president, and the history of his tenure... he accepted criticism with a smile even when it was unfair or sometimes exaggerated, no high words, no dancers to hunt down opponents. For the rest, and I agree with you, it is when the situation is not at its best that criticisms are strong. Is criticism forbidden? No. Under Iya, things were going well, and he was nevertheless targeted every day, and no one complained. He is in prison largely because of football because he had to step down, and some actors still gloat over this success. We have forgiven but not forgotten! So, let us express ourselves in peace.
