More than a dozen Cameroonian lawyers have sustained injuries in Buea in the South West Region, where policemen confronted them as they were about to stage a peaceful march, November 10 2016.
In the wake of the standoff between Common Law Lawyers and security forces, an official of the US consulate in Douala visited some of the protesting lawyers, who handed him a sealed memorandum.
“We were moving peacefully around Bocom in Mile 17 in Buea when policemen swooped on us, torturing us severely. Numbers of other colleagues sustained injuries on their head and legs like myself.
A female lawyer is among those who have been injured. We must ensure that our demands are met,” Barrister Melle Didien, told this reporter in a determined tone, Thursday November 10.
Prior to the police brutality on Common Law Lawyers, the entire Fako Division (Buea, Limbe, Muyuka, Tiko) had witnessed an early morning troop deployment of gun-totting policemen and gendarmes apparently to prevent and planned protest by lawyers.
Torture in Different areas
Reports say, the lawyers who had traveled from different parts of the region to converge on Buea were brutally halted, pulled out of their cars and beaten.
“The lawyers who were driving from Limbe to Buea were halted and beaten around mile 16 and Mile 17. Others were searched in the Muyuka area, ”
concordant witnesses in these localities said. Other sources indicate that security forces raided offices.
“The forces went as far as invading Barrister Lifanje Cosmos' office around Obama Restaurant in Buea and got lawyers who were in well beaten. Barrister Tomson Tabi is in the hospital with pains on his ribs,” another lawyer recounted.
Other unconfirmed reports said security forces had in the early hours of Thursday November 10 prevented lawyers from leaving their hotel rooms in the Muea area, where they has spent their night in preparation for the day's protest.
Why Lawyers were beaten
Reports from Buea quote police sources as saying they were given firm instructions to beat up any lawyer who approached the court premises. “ Nous sommes la pour maintainir l’ordre. On va tabasser tout ceux qui sont tetus. L’ordre vient d’en haut,” ( we are here to maintain order. We are going to beat up any one whop is stubborn.
Orders are from above),” said a security source who brutally hangs up the phone on this reporter, without explaining the reasons for the brutality on men of law and seizure of their wigs.
American Diplomat Steps In
In the wake of the standoff between Common Law Lawyers and security forces an official of the US consulate in Douala visited some of the protesting lawyers.
“ He told the lawyers not to resort to any violence,” the US diplomat, Stuart Wilson is quoted as saying. The disgruntled layers are said to have handed him a sealed memorandum.
Amid troop deployment, the lawyers are said to have successfully stage their peaceful protest in Muyuka subdivision.
The protest organised by the Fako Lawyers Association, FAKLA is said to be a continuation of another protest by lawyers in Bamenda in the North West Region.
They lawyers are opposed to what they describe as the assimilation of common law by the French civil law system.
They are also opposed to the non respect of their call for dialogue.

Republican Donald Trump stunned the world by defeating heavily favored rival Hillary Clinton in Tuesday's presidential election, ending eight years of Democratic rule and sending the United States on a new, uncertain path.
A wealthy real estate developer and former reality TV host, Trump rode a wave of anger toward Washington insiders to win the White House race against Clinton, the Democratic candidate whose gold-plated establishment resume included stints as a first lady, U.S. senator and secretary of state.
Democratic President Barack Obama, who campaigned hard against Trump, telephoned the Republican "to congratulate him on his victory" and invited him to the White House for a meeting on Thursday, the White House said in a statement on Wednesday. Obama will make a statement later on Wednesday about the election, the White House said.
"Ensuring a smooth transition of power is one of the top priorities the President identified at the beginning of the year and a meeting with the President-elect is the next step," the White House said.
Worried that a Trump victory could cause economic and global uncertainty, investors were in full flight from risky assets.
STUNNED WORLD
World leaders pledged to work with Trump but some officials expressed alarm that the vote could mark the end of an era in which Washington promoted democratic values and was seen by its allies as a guarantor of peace.
During the campaign, Trump expressed admiration for Russian President Vladimir Putin, questioned central tenets of the NATO military alliance and suggested that Japan and South Korea should develop nuclear weapons to shoulder their own defense burden.
Trump has promised to warm relations with Russia that have chilled under Obama over Russia's intervention in the Syrian civil war and its seizure of Ukraine's Crimea region.
Governments in Britain, China, Germany, Israel, Japan and Turkey, as well as Russia, congratulated Trump and said they would work with him.
"It is not an easy path but we are ready to do our part and do everything to return Russian and American relations to a stable path of development," Putin said.
Israel's Benjamin Netanyahu said he hoped to reach "new heights" in bilateral ties under Trump. Chinese President Xi Jinping said Beijing and Washington shared responsibility for promoting global development and prosperity.
Other officials, some of them with senior roles in government, took the unusual step of denouncing the outcome, calling it a worrying signal for liberal democracy and tolerance in the world.
"Trump is the pioneer of a new authoritarian and chauvinist international movement. He is also a warning for us," German Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel said in an interview with the Funke newspaper group.
U.S. neighbor Mexico was pitched into deep uncertainty by the victory for Trump, who has often accused it of stealing U.S. jobs and sending criminals across the border.
Trump wants to rewrite international trade deals to reduce trade deficits and has taken positions that raise the possibility of damaging relations with America's most trusted allies in Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
Prosecuting Clinton
Even though the FBI found no grounds for criminal charges after a probe into her use of a private email server rather than a government system while she was secretary of state, the issue allowed critics to raise doubts about her integrity. Hacked emails also showed a cozy relationship between her State Department and donors to her family's Clinton Foundation charity.
Trump seized on the emails to charge that Clinton represented a corrupt political system in Washington that had to be swept clean. His campaign manager however does not rule out special prosecutor for Hillary Clinton, says discussion to come 'all in due time' - MSNBC

Cameroon's main opposition leader, John Fru Ndi, has reportedly quelled a violent military brutality on thousands of civilians who joined lawyers Tuesday in a peaceful marchfor democracy, Anglophone rights, justice and the rule of law. Fru Ndi told the military to stop their brutality as they gassed the city and fired bullets and grenades.
Scores have been severely injured, most of them women and children."Do not shoot at them. Join them instead because they are fighting for you and your children and future generation," Fru Ndi convinced Paul Biya's military. "They are your own children and we are suffering from the same regime mess."Our sources confirmed that the soldiers succumbed to the opposition leaders suggestions and even used their phonesto record their conversation with the charismatic leader."One of the soldiers clapped for Fru Ndi," a local reporter told me.
In 1961, Anglophone Cameroon reunited French Cameroon following a plebiscite, although no legal document exists to prove their union.
Only two French-speaking leaders have ruled the West African nation since 1961.Paul Biya, 83, declared himself president for life in 2008.
They have marginalized the anglophones for several decades and literally cut them off from effectively integrating into every national policy, political observers say.
