A group of families of victims of the Eseka train disaster have launched legal proceedings against Bolloré Railways, the majority shareholder of the Cameroon Railway Company, Camrail.
CAMEROON TODAY learnt that the complaint was filed on November the 2nd, 2016 at Eseka, located some 128 km from Yaoundé, where the tragedy occurred. While investigations by public prosecutors from Mfoundi and Eseka are still ongoing to determine what actually caused the accident, lawyers representing the families are pointing fingers at some technical failures which according to them created the October 21st drama.
The groups of lawyers defending the families have also issued a statement saying a similar action could be taken before French courts. Cameroon government revealed that the train crash claimed the lives of 79 people. Independent sources have however, contested the figure and denounced the pro-government commission appointed by President Biya which secretly agreed to vindicate transport minister, Edgar Alain Mebo Ngo’o.

Report says the Train Conductor Mathias Y. and his Assistant T. Mukam who were controlling the monster engine that derailed on Friday Oct. 21st, have taken their turns in front of Prime Minister Philemon Yang's Investigating Committee to explain their own sides of the story."
Le Jour Newspaper" reporting on the story says these two men spent more than 6 hot hours in front of Prime Minister Yang's court, explaining word for word, everything that happened before, during and after the accident.Even though no one could tell what they were explaining inside that slaughter house of horror, it is believed they were pressured to the throat, to vomit out even errors that will implicate them later.Mathias Y. and T. Mukam were the two who were manipulating train No. 152, that left Yaounde for Douala with more than 1300 passengers in 16 wagons, but ended up drastically in Eseka.
They were later arrested and locked up at the Yaounde Judicial Police for interrogation, but President Biya's decree of Oct. 25th creating an Investigating Committee, sent them over to the members of that committee, who on their part questioned them accordingly. The paper says the Chief Conductor Mathias Y. is about 40 years old, and has been behind the train's dashboard for 10 years. The Investigating Committee set-up by President Biya has being widely criticized, as Cameroonians feel that members of the Civil Society, Religious and Political Leaders would have been involved in this Committee for Transparency sake.

Nine people have been killed in a car bomb blast at a military checkpoint in northern Nigeria. Officials and witnesses said on Tuesday that the bomb exploded at the checkpoint on a road leading to the northeastern city of Maiduguri. The victims were all aboard the explosives-laden vehicle.
There was not clear if any soldiers were injured in the incident.Preliminary reports said the vehicle was a minivan transporting ordinary passengers. The driver was also among the victims. There was no immediate claim of responsibility although local officials blamed the attack on Boko Haram, a Takfiri terrorist group operating in northern Nigeria and certain neighboring countries.More than 20,000 people have been killed and some 2.6 million people have been displaced from their homes since Boko Haram began its terror activities in 2009. Many blame corrupt officials in the Nigerian government and army forthe continued militancy.
Recent reports say the terrorist group is receiving some of its arms and ammunition from corrupt Nigerian officials.Attacks by Boko Haram had subsided in the recent past as leadership struggle in the group intensified. However, the months-long lull seems to have ended as the militant group has stepped up attacks on civilians and security forces in recent weeks.Last week, nine people were killed and two dozen were injured when Boko Haram operatives carried out two explosions in Maiduguri. The attacks were aimed at residents of a camp of refugees who had run away from Boko Haram.
