Who is the top black student in the UK in 2016?
Very often many people who rise to fame start from humble beginnings. The top black student in the UK 2016 Rare Rising Stars award is no stranger to such origins.
Amidou grew up in a village outside of Bamenda, in the North West region of Cameroon, where he didn’t start formal schooling until age ten. After taking O Levels in his village school and qualifying as a mental health nurse, he eventually joined his brother in London. He worked for the NHS for five years before studying engineering as an undergraduate at Brunel University, working as a nurse throughout his studies.

In 2008, he founded a health care clinic in Cameroon in order to address the lack of access to healthcare in rural areas. Today the clinic employs more than 22 nurses and two visiting doctors and serves around 100 patients per day.
Amidou has worked in the UK for Motorola and Vodafone, and is now studying a 1+1 MSc and MBA programme at Oxford with a Pershing Square Graduate Scholarship.
‘Every year, I am stunned by the quality of the Stars. Every year, I am inspired. Often facing unfavourable circumstances, our Stars have achieved remarkable things, and they deserve to be recognised’ said Raph Mokades, Managing Director of diversity recruitment firm Rare, which runs the awards.
It is known that the Oxford University has enjoyed distinguished positions on the Rare Rising Stars list, with fourteen entries over the last eight years. Oxford students have three times been named the UK’s top black student.

A Cameroonian citizen currently receiving treatment in Quebec-Canada after a liver transplantation in 2012 has launched a heartfelt appeal to the Canadian government , a few weeks before her scheduled deportation back to Cameroon for fear of dying once she returns home.
Madame Kadje Rose, 64, from Bandjoun,in the Western region of Cameroon, went to Quebec in 2011 to pay a visit her children on a Canadian visitors visa she obtained from the Canadian Embassy in Cameroon. However, during her stay in Quebec, she encountered health problems. In 2012, she underwent a liver transplantation at St. Luc Hospital in Montreal.
Since the operation, she has been undergoing treatment and check-ups and she has been placed under medication for the rest of her life. However, proper treatments and medicines are rare in Cameroon, according to statements from her. It will therefore be a death sentence if Canadian Immigration authorities decide to send her back to Cameroon.
Meanwhile, she and her family have engaged the services a Canadian lawyer Stéphane Handfield, who has filed in a second application for permanent residence on humanitarian grounds. Mrs. Kadje had previusly applied to stay in Canada, but her request was rejected. The lawyer has made a request to reopen the file.
"I have considered the additional information that were submitted after the refusal of the application, given their importance to the decision that was made, and I decided to reopen the case," wrote G. Lanthier, Senior immigration officer. He added that all factors have been considered.

Ethiopian officials have blocked social media sites across the country until national school exams conclude on Wednesday.
Facebook and other mobile apps have been disabled since Saturday, and citizens are complaining.
The government communications office said the sites were blocked to ensure an “orderly exam process,” beginning on Monday.
An online leak of national exam sheets in May forced the tests to be postponed. Some opposition media claimed responsibility for the leaks and many have called it an embarrassment for the government.
Blogger Daniel Berhane says the government has no legal basis to deny the freedom of expression to millions of citizens. He says that “this is not China.”
Ethiopia’s Education Ministry says 254,000 students are expected to sit for the national exams.
