The people of Nanga-Eboko of the Centre Region are yet to come to terms with the gruesome act that occurred on 4th May 2016 where three family members died after a serious family disagreement.

According to information from the ‘Adjudant Chef Major’ Raphael Djietcheu, Commander of the Nanga-Eboko Gendarmerie Post, Charles Ngankou , 59, a  driver with the Guinness Depot in Nanga-Eboko, shot his wife to death- Estelle Sylvie Metente, 24, about 11 am, following a quarrel.

Charles Ngakou who had retired home shortly after a Labour Day feast on the 3rd of May 2016, was caught up in a serious quarrel with his wife Estelle Mentente who accused him of his promiscuous behavior with women during the party.

The quarreling came to a point where Charles Ngankou could no longer bear but decided to send her away to her parents with a transport fare of 10,0000FCF. Shortly then, Charles asked her to return the money but she refused and thereafter he pulled off his pistol and shot her to death including her 24 year old brother Bisso Jathan, who had tried to save his sister’s life.

After the bloody scene Charles who was under a serious man hunt by the Gendarmerie decided to kill himself with the gun.

While the three dead bodies were taken to the Nanga-Eboko District Hospital Mortuary, the Gendarmerie team has opened up investigations as to why a civilian such as Charles Ngakou should own a pistol which is even more deadly than pistols commonly used by Cameroon security forces.

The world is shocked by a video which appears to show three policemen harassing and humiliating a man with no legs and one arm.

More than 100,000 have watched the short film posted on Facebook, which shows the man being abandoned by the police officers after being made to remove his artificial legs and strip to his underpants.

Violent scenes break out in France during anti-labour reform protests

As the policemen walk away, a passer-by who filmed the scene on his smartphone is heard shouting: “Officer, officer, we need you. Officer, turn back please. This is humiliation, It is not normal.”

The man who made the video, Jean-Didier Bakekolo, told French media: “I found myself witnessing a police search of exceptional brutality. The officers forced this man to undress and left him struggling to put back his artificial legs…He was ill-treated to the point of being forced to sit on the ground partially undressed.”

The incident, which happened on the underground platforms at the Gare de Lyon in Paris on Monday night, comes at a time when relations between police and public in France are already strained.

Police have been accused of acting with unnecessary violence to control a fringe of aggressive demonstrators during left-wing protests against plans to reform French employment law. Police unions have retorted that the violence comes mostly from the protesters and that several officers have been seriously hurt.

One police union, Alliance, has called for a demonstration by police on 18 May to protests against what they see as a “campaign of anti-police hatred”  on the left of French politics.

Nigerians in Essen-Germany  came out en masse on Friday 6 May 2016, to show solidarity and to protest the barbaric activities perpetrated  in Nimbo, Uzo-Uwani local government areas of Enugu State by Fulani herdsmen.
The protestors who were in their numbers peacefully singing slogans while waving banners condemning  the killings and destructions by these herdsmen.
Speaking to Cameroon Concord's EU correspondent on Friday afternoon, one of the prostesters-Emeka Ani, had this to say:

To be honest with you,We are shocked and saddened over the level of killings perpetrated by these  Fulani herdsmen in Nimbo community and in other parts of Eastern Nigeria.
The Nigerian community in Germany sympathizes with the Government and people of Enugu State.

We appeal to the people of Enugu State to remain calm and we applaud the Governor of Enugu State, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for the maturity he displayed in handling the matter.

Last week alone,six people were killed with scores wounded and properties destroyed by suspected herdsmen in the Nimbo, Uzo-Uwani local government areas .
Michael Charles Ugochukwu ,the organizer of the protest in his speech expressed gratitude to all who turned out to take part in the protest march while also calling on the attention of the global authorities including Germany to urge the Nigerian Government to do more to protect its citizens against such attacks.

A few days ago, Nigerian in the United Kingdom, also staged a similar protest at the UK Westminister Parliament in London to condemn the killings, meanwhile back in Nigeria, students from the Federation of Association of Nsukka Students and the South-East Students Association last week staged a protest as well in condemnation of the killings.

Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa has implemented a smoking ban at public gatherings and venues, despite the country having one of the lowest tobacco usage rates in the world.

The mayor of Addis Ababa, Diriba Kuma, announced on Wednesday that smoking would be made illegal in places including bars, cafes and restaurants, as well as at major public gatherings such as religious festivals. Smoking on streets is still permitted but tobacco advertising is also to be banned, AFP reported. “Due to tobacco, people are dying and being exposed to several health hazards,” said Kuma. “For these reasons, the public have the responsibility to fight tobacco smoking in public gatherings.” 

The announcement follows a law passed by Ethiopia’s parliament in 2014 but which has so far only been implemented in the northeastern town of Mekelle. Violators of the law will face a fine of 2,000 Ethiopian biir ($92) or 2,500 Ethiopian biir ($116) for those who send children under the age of 18 to buy cigarettes for them.

The prevalence of smoking in Ethiopia is one of the lowest in the world—only 0.5 percent of Ethiopian women and 8.9 percent of Ethiopian men smoke any tobacco product, according to 2012 data collated by the World Health Organization (WHO). According to the World Lung Foundation, Ethiopians smoked an average of just 75 cigarettes per year in 2014. But there are signs that smoking is on the rise, with Ethiopia’s premier tobacco company the National Tobacco Enterprise increasing its production of cigarettes from 4 billion to 6 billion per year.

Ethiopia signed up to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control in 2004 and has until 2020 to implement the ban on smoking in public places across the country. Other African countries including Kenya and Niger have introduced public smoking bans in recent years but levels of enforcement have varied.

A Cameroonian has attempted to take his own life by climbing an electric pole in  Lagos-Nigeria.Schocked residents said the the individual who appeared to be mentally deranged was demanding  N5 million(14 Million FCFA) or he would kill himself. According to witnesses, when persuaded to come down from the PHCN pole, the Cameroonian, Frederic Gino, told the bewildered onlookers that he would only climb down if he got the money. 

Media reports say Gino had climbed the electric pole in an attempt to commit suicide, the man had been on the pole as early 5:30am and all efforts by the community to bring him down proved abortive. He was, however, rescued by officials of Lagos State Emergency Agency in collaboration with officials of the state Fire Services.When questioned, He said his name is Fredrick Gino from Cameroon and he doesn't know how he got to Nigeria

The individual sustained  injuries during the rescue attempt and was immediately taken to a local hospital.
