Cameroon defender Benoit Assou-Ekotto has signed a one-year deal with French Ligue 1 side St Etienne.
The 31-year-old has been without a club since leaving English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur, where he spent nine years.
He did not play at all for Tottenham in the 2014-15 season and spent the previous season on loan with Queens Park Rangers.
"Officially at St Etienne so happy - back in football," he wrote on Twitter.
Assou-Ekotto has not played for Cameroon since the 2014 World Cup in Brazil when he was involved in an argument with his team-mate Benjamin Moukandjo and even appeared to headbutt him.

The Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon have returned to the country yesterday Tuesday 23rd June 2015 after a commendable show at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada.
The girls of Enow Ngatchu arrived Cameroon at 7 p.m. with a delegation of football officials led by the Minister of Sports and Physical Education, Adoum Garoua.
The Lionesses were received by the Minister of Women Empowerment and the Family, Marie Therese Abena Ondoua accompanied by some former football players and officials.
Fans on their part came out in numbers with messages of love and encouragement to the Lionesses and their Head Coach, Enow Ngatchu. The euphoria was glaring in songs and dances.
The fans who came with groups exhibiting dances from the different regions of the country did not wait a minute but force their way through to the girls either for an authograph or a photo.
Friends and family members expressed love with bouquet of flowers, hugs and smiles.
The loudness of the songs and shouts could speak of the girls' brilliance during the 2015 FIFA's Women World Cup in Canada.
Some streets of Yaounde were flooded with curious fans who stood for hours waiting for the arrival of Enow Ngatchu's gilrs; it was quite a heroic moment with the Lionesses who smiled at every insatnce.
It is worth noting that the collapse of female football clubs in the country years back greatly played adversely on the image of female football.
This reduced female football to an extent that Cameroonians felt it was non-existent and concentrated more on the male category but got disappointed with the Lions’ debacle at the 2010 and 2014 performances in South Africa and Brazil respectively.
Perception of female football in Cameroon greatly changed with the recent performance staged by Enow Ngatchu’s girls in Canada.
This highly rekindled the passion Cameroonians have for football causing some to think their performance in Canada is better than what the Lions did in South Africa and Brazil.
Many think the government should concentrate more on female football by putting in place training grounds, reinstating female football leagues and encouraging the female folk.
A good number of fans on their part have availed themselves with the female Jerseys and related gadgets while others discuss the capacity of the girls, like Ngono Mani, Onguene, Enganamouit and the list goes on.
The Lionesses return with honour after reaching the 8th finals at the ongoing World Cup in Canada, a record that no African football team has created in the Women’s World Cup history.
During their first round matches, the Lionesses thrashed Ecuador 6-0 in their first match and in their second match they battled with Japan but bowed out in a 2-1 defeat.
In their third and last first round game, the girls defeated Switzerland 2-1 to secure a position in the second round but it did not work out well as the Lionesses were eliminated in their first second round game by the Chinese girls.
After putting up a good fight in the 2015 FIFA Women’s Cup in Canada, fans have come to love female football in the country and hope the government encourages it at a time Cameroon is preparing to host the 2016 Africa Nations Cup in the female category.
