The second and most decisive term of the 2015-2016 academic year officially kicked off yesterday, January 4, 2015, in the country after the Christmas break. After two weeks of rest and feasting, secondary school students returned to class for the Second Term. In order to ensure effective take-off of classes and to encourage students, the Minister of Secondary Education, Ngalle Bibehe Jean Ernest Massena, visited some schools in Yaounde yesterday, January 4, 2015. He was accompanied by Boniface Bayaola, the Secretary of State in the Ministry of Secondary Education in charge of Teacher Training.
Speaking to journalists after, Minister Ngalle Bibehe expressed satisfaction with the effective resumption of classes and also hailed teachers for their determination and willingness to work harder. He called on teachers to encourage children to work harder, especially as this is a decisive term. Concerning overcrowding in some schools, he expressed hope that progressively, schools will be able to respect standards. In all the schools visited in Yaounde, the Minster had brief meetings with officials and also met students in class. Minister Bibehe was at CETIC Charles Atangana, Bastos, Government Bilingual High School, Nkol-Eton, Government Girls’ Technical College, Ngoa-Ekelle, Government Teachers’ Training College, Nlongkak and Government Technical High School, Nsam.
The latter has been operating from the campus of Government Bilingual Teachers’ Training College, Nlongkak for the past 25 years. The second term is the most decisive in the academic year, thus it will take good judgment for students to sail through. During this term, students will also be involved in extra-curricular activities in preparation for the 50th National Youth Day celebrations. These include sports, cultural activities and march past rehearsals, among others. Students are therefore expected to work hard to be able to face the task ahead.

Violence broke out in Ngangue, Douala, in the morning of December 31, 2015, following a violent physical assault on a Pentecostal church pastor who rebuked a mourner for urinating on the church door. Hordes of neighbours who were awoken by the incident at about 5:30am, quickly rescued the 50-year-plus pastor who had already received several blows and was being smashed to the ground.
Other mourners at a wake keep in a nearby home all rushed to the church, but were soon divided over what action to take. Each of the two opposing camps quickly gained the support of furious Christians of the church and neighbours. Another moment of fighting between the two sides then ensued. Soon after, the pastor’s sons from a distant neighbourhood stormed the scene and landed a beer bottle on the assailant’s head, maiming him.
Four soldiers of the Rapid Intervention Battalion and two gendarmes later intervened, arresting the Man of God and wife and temporarily placing them in custody while the wounded was immediately rushed to a nearby medical clinic for attention.

Hours to the crossover from 2015 to 2016, Cameroonians expressed New Year wishes to loved ones and to their country. In Bamenda, Buea, Kumba, Mamfe, Douala and Yaounde, almost every city dweller said a blessing that 2016 be a year of peace, security and an end to Boko Haram terrorism. Some people wished that CPDM corruption be reduced and more jobs be created for the youths in the new year. As Cameroonians made public their aspirations for the new year they also celebrated the new year in grand style.
As directed by our Chairman and CEO, our entire Intelligence Unit in Yaounde started the year in prayers and worship. The Yaounde Festival ground, YAFE witnessed a sharp increase in the numbers of visitors who had an outdoor celebration. The Central Post Office roundabout and other road junctions in the nation's capital, Yaounde also recorded a multitudes who enjoyed the beauty of the city and immortalised the last moments of 2015. Snack bars, restaurants, cabarats and night clubs had the greatest share of the festivities.
However, the address of the President of the Republic, Paul Biya that was expected to be a key moment to mark the new year, as usual came with nothing. It was indeed an empty speech. Some political commentators had thought that President Biya was going to announced he was stepping down----it never happened. 2018 will be a year of miracles.

Total, Oilibya (former Mobil) and MRS (formerly Texaco) have blatantly refused to sell petrol and gas following prices decreed by the head of state in his end of year address to the nation. The various oil companies have maintained the old price of 650 FCFA per liter for Super and 600 FCFA for Diesel. Paul Biya announced a 20 frs reduction, but nothing has so far been implemented by the Minister of Commerce. Nothing has changed at the pumps ever since December 31, 2015, when Paul Biya solemnly declared that fuel prices at the pump should be revised on the 1st of January 2016.
Biya's Minister of Trade, Luc Magloire Atangana Mbarga, in his capacity as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Hydrocarbon Price Stabilization Fund, said in a release that a liter of Super will undergo a decline 20 FCFA while that of diesel will lose 25 FCFA. Said Minister Atangana Mbarga, "Firm instructions have been given to all the downstream oil sector operators for the new prices to be stopped and strict application of the national territory from the effective date of 1 January 2016." However, at the time of filing this report, nothing had changed on the ground.
