The regional section of the Criminal Investigations Department for the Central region, in Yaoundé, has just dismantled a network of conmen who were using the social networking tool Facebook for their criminal activities. These are 5 young people (one of them a prisoner operating from the Kondengui penitentiary in the capital), out of which two are still on the run.
By creating fake profiles supposedly belonging to Ministers and other managing directors on Facebook, the police explained, the members of this network were sending friend requests to citizens, who obviously accepted them, happy to have a Minister or MD as a “friend” on Facebook.
Having thus established contact, the conmen hiding behind the fake Ministers and MD profiles then offered to put their “friends” in touch with their private secretary to help them get jobs, professional attachments or public contracts.
The private secretary who was available only through his mobile telephone, and who was in reality an inmate of the Kondengui central prison, would then request a bribe that was exclusively handled through money transfers in the name of an accomplice who pretended to be the assistant of the MD or the Minister.
Once the money was received, the members of the criminal network would then share it amongst themselves and pick another victim to continue their illegal enterprise. Due to all the complaints lodged by citizens who fell prey to this network, the case was referred to the police who investigated, leading to the dismantling of this technologically-aware network of fraudsters.

The incident happened on December 29 last year in municipal hospital of Belgorod in southwestern Russia. The violent attack was captured by the hospital security camera, and emerged online days later, with some 700,000 people having watched it in a day.
In the video, a half-naked patient is seen being checked up, when suddenly a male doctor storms in, accompanied by a nurse. The woman points her finger at the man, and the doctor, shouting, "you touched my nurse," pulls the man off the couch and hits him hard on the head.
When another man who accompanied the patient to the hospital tried to interfere, he was also brutally beaten by the doctor. Shouting "have you understood me?" the doctor kept hitting both men while they were on the floor. Nurses pleaded for him to stop.
After the enraged doctor eventually left the room, a woman's voice – apparently the offended nurse's – can be heard explaining to her colleagues behind the door that the patient was asked to lie down calmly during a procedure, but didn't follow her orders.
It's only after some two minutes that they appear to notice that the unconscious patient on the floor is not moving. "Are you alive?" his friend asks him, before warning the medics that something's not right.
In the next eight minutes, the nurses summon an emergency room doctor to the scene, while the doctor who hit the patient attempts to bring him back to life. The man is then seen being dragged from the camera’s view, while a cleaning lady washes the floor. The emergency doctor never appeared in the video.
The man died of a head injury, officials said. He reportedly arrived in the hospital with complaints about stomach pain. In the video, the medics are heard discussing whether he was drunk or not.
Russia's Investigative Committee has launched a criminal case against the doctor under the article "infliction of death by negligence." If found guilty under it, the doctor faces up to two years in prison. The doctor has reportedly been fired from the hospital. Russia's Health Ministry has launched its own check in Belgorod.

At least one person was killed and several dozen wounded Thursday as hundreds of armed thugs attacked police stations in Mokolo, one of Yaounde's largest markets. The thugs — some carrying locally made guns, machetes, and stones — were protesting what they say are excesses and human rights abuses by the police.
Businesswoman Dzekem Maria, who is among the protesters, say they are against police brutality and extortion.
"The police come here, harass people, beat people and we are very angry with them because they make like that and kill some people. The other day they came here and killed one young man," she said.
The most senior police officer in the area, Forsua Martin Claude, says the youths were avenging the death of a suspect who was wounded in a shootout with the police. He says the suspect had stolen money from a lady in the market and resisted police attempts to arrest him.
Fear of more attacks
Claude says police fear the attacks may extend to other markets in the capital city.
He says it is intolerable to defy public security and they are going to arrest all criminals. Claude says he has asked for more policemen to be deployed to the market.
The attacks continued spreading from the police station to police posts in the area. Although most of the attackers were eventually pushed back, there are still pockets of resistance in the market.
A senior government official in the area, Yampem Ousman, says he hopes business can quickly get back to normal.
He says thanks to the energetic action taken by the police, peace is returning to the area and business activity has to resume soon.
Cameroonians have often accused the police of corrupt practices.
Last month Transparency International reported Cameroon was one of the most corrupt countries in sub-Saharan Africa, and said the Cameroon police forces are among the most corrupt professional groups.
