Staff of the Senate yesterday January 6, 2016 in the Chambers of the Yaounde Conference Centre rose from their seats to, in one loud voice, wish Senate President, Marcel Niat Njifenji, long life and total happiness and prosperity throughout the year 2016. The surprising gesture occurred at the instigation of the Secretary General of the Senate, Michel Meva’a Meboutou, during the latter’s address to the Senate President. On behalf of the personnel, Michel Meva’a Meboutou expressed gratitude to the President of the Senate for all the care they have enjoyed since the start of activities in the Senate, for measures taken to regularise their staff status as well as for training opportunities that enabled them upgrade their skills in parliamentary business and administrative tasks.
Mounting the rostrum, Marcel Niat Njifenji in turn and “with cordiality and sincerity”, presented his New Year wishes to members of the Executive Bureau of the Senate, Senators as well as personnel and their families. To him, the parliamentary institution fully accomplished its objectives in 2015, voting 19 bills and checking government action through question-answer sessions. While pledging the institution’s support to the President of the Republic, Paul Biya, he urged all to be mobilised for 2016, which according him, is a year of victory which will also bring peace and stability. Members of the Senate’s Executive Bureau, parliamentary groups, staff of the General Secretariat and President’s Cabinet, then filed past the Senate President to individually present their New Year wishes. The Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, Martin Chungong, was special guest at the event which also saw the decoration of Senator Ouli Ndongo Monique with the Commander of the National Order of Valour.

Highlights of the ceremony included the decoration of some staff with May 20, 2015 knighthood distinctions by the Grand Chancellery of National Orders, attestations to retiring staff, labour medals to other staff and prizes to the best staff for 2015.
The colourful ceremony that held in the Banquet Hall of the National Assembly ushered in 2016, which according to the Secretary General, Victor Yene Ossomba, is a year of hope. Speaking on behalf of the staff and MPs of the legislative organ, Victor Yene Ossomba described the House Speaker as a parliamentary icon whose 45-year experience in parliamentary life – with 23 as House Speaker – was an asset to the institution which played its role fully in 2015, amongst State’s institutions. “2015 was a year full of success,” he declared. Amongst achievements last year, the Chief Scribe mentioned brilliant successes in parliamentary diplomacy, intense activities by parliamentary networks as well as audiences granted by the House Speaker to foreign parliamentary delegations and to a multitude of heads of diplomatic missions in Cameroon.
Furthermore, parliamentary business during the 2015 legislative year also unrolled hitch-free with 19 bills voted, 10 question-answer plenary sessions held, 62 oral questions posed and four written questions submitted to check government’s activities. The staff heard with satisfaction that negotiations between government and Chinese donors were quite advanced for an imminent construction of a new headquarters for the National Assembly.

The second and most decisive term of the 2015-2016 academic year officially kicked off yesterday, January 4, 2015, in the country after the Christmas break. After two weeks of rest and feasting, secondary school students returned to class for the Second Term. In order to ensure effective take-off of classes and to encourage students, the Minister of Secondary Education, Ngalle Bibehe Jean Ernest Massena, visited some schools in Yaounde yesterday, January 4, 2015. He was accompanied by Boniface Bayaola, the Secretary of State in the Ministry of Secondary Education in charge of Teacher Training.
Speaking to journalists after, Minister Ngalle Bibehe expressed satisfaction with the effective resumption of classes and also hailed teachers for their determination and willingness to work harder. He called on teachers to encourage children to work harder, especially as this is a decisive term. Concerning overcrowding in some schools, he expressed hope that progressively, schools will be able to respect standards. In all the schools visited in Yaounde, the Minster had brief meetings with officials and also met students in class. Minister Bibehe was at CETIC Charles Atangana, Bastos, Government Bilingual High School, Nkol-Eton, Government Girls’ Technical College, Ngoa-Ekelle, Government Teachers’ Training College, Nlongkak and Government Technical High School, Nsam.
The latter has been operating from the campus of Government Bilingual Teachers’ Training College, Nlongkak for the past 25 years. The second term is the most decisive in the academic year, thus it will take good judgment for students to sail through. During this term, students will also be involved in extra-curricular activities in preparation for the 50th National Youth Day celebrations. These include sports, cultural activities and march past rehearsals, among others. Students are therefore expected to work hard to be able to face the task ahead.
