Unveiling Tomorrow's Cameroon Through Today's News

Breaking

Julien Gnipieven Tekombo, a Cameroonian-born doctor based in Switzerland, has embarked on a monumental task to revolutionize and modernize the healthcare sector in Cameroon. His vision, nurtured since childhood, was to establish a high-quality and affordable hospital in his home country. In February, Tekombo realized this dream by opening the "Centre Médical Dr. Gnipieven Tekombo" in Bikok, a small village 30 kilometers south of Yaoundé, the capital of Cameroon.

Tekombo's journey to this achievement is marked by a lifelong commitment to his vision. Born in Cameroon, he pursued his education in the USA and holds a practice for psychology in St. Gallen, Switzerland. His foundation, the Gnipieven Tekombo Foundation, based in Winterthur, Switzerland, played a crucial role in financing and supporting the hospital project. The foundation, named after Tekombo himself, reflects his desire to demonstrate that Africans can actively contribute to improving conditions on their continent.{loadmoduleid 378}

The hospital, operated by fifteen permanent employees from the region and supported by volunteer doctors from abroad, offers services in psychiatry, psychotherapy, neurology, and various medical specialties. The construction of the clinic took two years and cost nearly two million francs, mostly funded by Tekombo himself, with some contributions from donations.

Tekombo's motivation to transform healthcare in Cameroon stems from personal experiences witnessing the impact of inadequate medical care on individuals in his community. His commitment to providing quality healthcare led him to study medicine in Germany, the USA, and Switzerland. The foundation collaborates with international partners, and Tekombo's colleagues, friends, and family actively participate in the project.

The hospital's location in Bikok was chosen strategically, considering the lack of nearby healthcare facilities and the proximity to the international airport. The clinic provides affordable healthcare services, with consultation fees and treatment costs comparable to public hospitals in Cameroon. Patients pay for their treatments, but the foundation has established a fund to assist those who cannot afford medical expenses, particularly young and single mothers.

Julien Tekombo, who plans to visit the hospital three to four times a year, emphasizes the importance of knowledge transfer. Through collaborations with Swiss doctors and medical professors, the hospital receives medical devices at reduced costs. Furthermore, Tekombo's foundation supports a Cameroon medical student at the University of Basel, promoting education and healthcare in the country.

The Tekombo Hospital stands as a testament to Julien Gnipieven Tekombo's lifelong vision and commitment to improving healthcare in Cameroon. The hospital's success stories, including the recent births of two babies, highlight the meaningful impact of Tekombo's dedication to his community and continent.
