It was about 1:45am today when flames erupted from a shop containing cotton around Messa Presse at the Douala Port, drawing the attention of the nearby population.
Attempts by locals to put off the fire proved futile as the flames proved stronger. The fire fighting brigade that was called came one hour later but ran short of water, leaving about 50 containers at the mercy of the fire.
By 4:30 am when the fire fighters returned, the entire shop was razed to ashes Administrative and municipal authorities were there 6am to evaluate the damages which is estimated at 4billion francs CFA. Judicial police in Douala have opened investigations to determine the cause of the inferno.

The early morning fire that ravished over 7 stalls yesterday March 30 2017 at the Limbe New market has left traders wondering aloud whether the fire was deliberate or accidental.
Eye witness reports say that the fire which started in one of the over seven stores could be having a hiding agenda.
“We found old tyres behind the burnt shops” says an eye witness. I am sure that these were some of the materials used for lighting the fire” he adds.
Reasons as to why the said shops could be deliberately set ablaze converged towards one point according to critics.
“I think the burning of these shops is strongly connected to the on-going Anglophone struggle” says a Limbe based critic. “Limbe inhabitants have been organising ghost towns to pressurize the government to solve the Anglophone problem. Despite the massive mobilization, some individuals still go ahead to disrespect Ghost Town days and open their shops. I am very sure these are the Victims of the fire” he says.
Pundits say the recent fires in the Bamenda Food Market, Fundong Market and the latest Limbe New Market fire may have been powered by the same motivations.

Helen a married woman of 38 years old who works in one of the popular enterprises in Douala says her boss has warned his female employees that he may not have a place for them again if they soon become expectant.
According to Helen their boss considers the 9 months of gravidity as unproductive to his enterprise and is sometimes fast to discharge female employees who fall prey.
“Many women who have left to go and put to birth have been replaced by our boss within the time the nursing mothers are away” says Helen.
She says many women nowadays prefer to deliver all their children before venturing into the job market.
Helen is considering quitting her job, having three children before stumping back into the job market. All she prays is that jobs should be available when she returns for part two.
Many women have similar cries like that of Helen almost everywhere in Africa and even in some Western countries. Employers like hers exist everywhere and victims are completely unaware that there are provisions on the labour code that protects them should they consider taking in a seed.

Although with the physical eye one can see that the striking teachers appear to be holding the government by the testis for non-payment of advances, the social media seems to be saying the reverse.
According to the social media, the so called teachers strike for the non-payment of salary advances is a mere government device to prove to the international community that Cameroon is a democratic state and always ready for dialogue.
Others say, judging from the cooperation of the strike leaders with the government, it is clear that they were installed by the government; they say government may be attempting to stage a perfect strike where the organized and highly cooperative striking teachers will be very willing to yield to dialogue thereby showing to the whole world that the government is always ready for negotiation no matter the situation.
Social media critics say if government is trying to vindicate itself by indirectly staging a strike, then it is an expensive joke; they say such a strike could escalade to uncontrollable levels if care is not taken.
Onlookers remain confused about the situation. "I see the teachers on TV really striking" says an onlooker. "It is hard to believe that this is a staged strike" he adds.
Although nobody is sure of the assertions made on the social media, pundits say there is no smoke without fire. Others say it is the end that justifies the means.

Some areas of the Douala 5 municipality have been hit hard by water scarcity over the past one month.
According to a local inhabitant they lastly tasted the precious liquid from CAMWATER taps as long as one month ago.
Some victims say with humour that they are humbled by the commitment and timeliness of the water company in distributing bills even though there is no water.
"I have not been able to carry water from my tap for more than 1 month now but all I receive are bills. I don’t know whether the distributors of those bills are aware that there is no water" asks a grumbling local.
The affected locality has resorted to using well water and some complain that it has caused their children to develop serious diarrhea.
"My child has developed stomach problems ever since we started using well water and I suspect that it is this well water that has caused it" says an angry inhabitant.
Reports say despite all the complaints directed to CAMWATER office, no clear response have been gotten from the company as to when the precious liquid will once more be made available.
